Volunteer For Dyslexia Scotwest
Dyslexia Scotwest is a proud to be an organisation that is heavily reliant on volunteers. Volunteers work in a number of different areas throughout the organisation, including advocacy and mentoring work with dyslexic people, staffing the helpline, training, research and development of resources, administration and behind the scenes support, events management, and fundraising.

At the moment, we are actively seeking volunteers in the following areas:

  • Volunteer Events Organisers: Work as part of a team to organise our two major fundraising events, the Charity Ball, and the Ladies Lunch, as well as other smaller events and fundraising opportunities. Outgoing people with good organisational skills are ideal for this opportunity.
  • Volunteer Director: Our Board of Directors all serve on a voluntary basis. We are seeking a couple of suitably qualified people to serve in this capacity. Candidates would need to show that they are fit people to serve on a Board of Directors under Scottish Corporate law.

We also periodically have a need for the following jobs, and although we currently have enough volunteers in these roles, we are happy to take names for future reference:

  • Administration Volunteer: Volunteers who carry out basic administrative tasks, including database management, mail-outs, filing, and other basic administration.
  • Research and Development Volunteer: Volunteers conduct research to keep Dyslexia Scotwest up to date on changes in legislation, teaching techniques, science, and other things related to dyslexia. Research skills (internet and other areas) are essential.
  • Volunteer Mentor / Advocates: These volunteers provide help and advice to people who might need it, be they parents, dyslexic adults, employers etc. Mentor / Advocates also represent Dyslexia Scotwest at open meetings and official functions, providing information to the public about dyslexia. While this is not a counselling role, individuals interested in this role need a modicum of maturity, a level head and ability to speak to people.

We recognise that volunteers have varying amounts of time available to them, so we try to be as flexible as possible when organising volunteer opportunities. We sit down with each new volunteer, assess their skills, and determine an individual job description, as well as working out what training and support is needed.

If you have a few hours available a week, and one of the above jobs interests you, then call or email us today and we will be very happy to get you involved.
