Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award
Dyslexia Scotwest has been running the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award Program in the west of Scotland since 2002. The program began with a pilot project with schools in East Renfrewshire which was very successful. We are now extending the project to other schools in the 12 unitary authorities that Dyslexia Scotwest covers. Recently 4 schools in West Dunbartonshire qualified for dyslexia friendly status, and we are currently working with Dunoon Grammar in Argyll and Bute to help the school become dyslexia friendly.
Becoming dyslexia friendly requires a significant commitment from a school, and involves participation from not only the teachers, but from other school staff, parents and students. It is also a detailed and lengthy process, which requires a thorough examination of the schools’ processes and procedures.
Becoming dyslexia friendly requires a school to put in place changes to allow the early identification and assessment of dyslexic children, and to put in place appropriate support processes for them. But these changes also promote a change in culture within the school, one which leads to inclusion and understanding, not just of dyslexic children, but of children with all sorts of additional support needs. Thus, becoming dyslexia friendly helps far more than just the dyslexic children in the school.
