Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award Assessment Criteria

The Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award (DFSA) is provided to schools which put procedures in place to assist dyslexic students to achieve their full potential. For a school to gain this award it is assessed against set criteria by staff from Dyslexia Scotwest. Once these criteria are met the school receives the award.

THE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE

  • A meeting is held with key management personnel within the school to outline the procedures involved in the D.F.S.A. process. The assessment criteria is examined item by item to ensure a clear understanding of the targets required. A steering committee involving Dyslexia Scotwest staff, school staff and parents is set up.

  • Dyslexia Scotwest staff begin the assessment process and an awareness session is presented to all staff within the school (including all Teaching Staff, Classroom Assistants, Office Staff, Catering Staff, and Janitorial Staff).

  • The assessment takes a holistic approach, seeking the views of school staff, parents and pupils. Staff, parents and pupils are all given the chance to give their views on the “dyslexia-friendly” status of the school.

  • Meetings take place between Dyslexia Scotwest and Additional Needs Staff.

  • An initial assessment is made of the school by Dyslexia Scotwest and possible “areas of improvement” are suggested. Dyslexia Scotwest will provide any assistance necessary to make adjustments.

  • After any necessary adjustments have been made, reassessments occur and a full report is prepared by Dyslexia Scotwest staff. This report is presented to the steering committee, and providing the committee accepts the report, Dyslexia Friendly Status is awarded to the school.
