Help and Advice for Parents
Do you think your child is dyslexic?
The term ‘dyslexia’ covers a wide range of learning difficulties with oral and written language e.g. listening, speaking, coordination, reading and writing. A child with dyslexia learns certain things differently to most other children and traditional teaching methods often have limited success with dyslexic learners. Dyslexia cannot be cured but with support and interventions tailored to the individual, can be successfully managed.
If you think your child may be dyslexic it is a good idea to talk to your child’s teacher about the problems you have observed. When discussing your child it is really helpful to identify the specific problems that your child is having, eg is she/he hearing differences in sounds or learning letter names? Some schools offer programmes that may be appropriate for your child.
Always remember each child has abilities, skills and special qualities. With the proper help and encouragement they can be successful learners.
