Strategies for helping children

While your child should be getting extra assistance at school, there are many things you can also do at home to ensure they keep up to date with their education.

The most important thing you can do is support your child. Give them plenty of encouragement and stay positive. Children can very easily get discouraged, or convince themselves they are "thick". Likewise, children can become very upset if they feel they are different from their peers. So it is important to give them plenty of praise, positive reinforcement and encouragement. Concentrate on the things they are good at.

There are numerous things you can do at home to help your child keep up at school. The following are just some of these:

  • Help them with their homework (but don't do it for them!)
  • Technology assistance such as software, spelling programs etc
  • Home spelling and reading programs
  • Extra tuition

There are also many other things you can do. Just experiment and see what works best for your child.
